BELIEVERS AGAINST THE WAR
A Five Year Iraq Nightmare

Clackamas, OR - Wednesday, March 19th will mark the 5th anniversary of the U.S. invasion of Iraq, and the beginning of the 6th year of a blody occupation that is illegal even under the loosely defined terms of the October 2002 "Use of Force" Resolution.

BELIEVERS AGAINST THE WAR (BATW) asks this of our fellow believers: “Why do you continue to support this ill-conceived, unbiblical, unconstitutional occupation?  On what Christian principle do you justify the five calamitous years of bloodshed?

At a recent National Religious Broadcasters convention, President Bush claimed, before an adoring crowd, that our occupations of Iraq and Afghanistan are part of, “God's universal gift of freedom to humanity.”  He went on to say that the carnage and destruction we have rained down on the Iraqi people is justified because, “we believe that every human being bears the image of our Maker.”  Mr. Bush may want to heed this warning, “Be not deceived, God is not mocked.” Galatians 6:7

Apparently speaking on behalf of mankind for all eternity, the President went on to make the preposterous assertion that his invasion of Iraq "was the right decision...is the right decision...and it will forever be the right decision."  The room full of religious broadcasters responded to this megalomaniacal declaration with rousing cheers and a standing ovation.  This was despite an exhaustive Pentagon study released this week (a study of over 600,000 documents) that confirms once and for all that Saddam Hussein had NO link to Al Qaeda – and in spite of the 2005 final conclusion from the CIA’s top weapons inspector that Iraq possessed NO weapons of mass destruction at the time of our invasion.

Dave Brownlow, BATW Ex. Dir., said regarding Bush’s convention speech, “Normally, any thinking audience would respond to such utter nonsense with jeers, howls and scornful looks.  However, in a convention room full of religious pharisees, these disingenuous claims of a failed president were met with fervent praise and adulation.  Unbelievable, absolutely unbelievable.”

Brownlow continued, “This is the precise moment in history when we need Christian leaders like James Dobson (who also spoke at the convention) to make a stand for peace and righteousness.  Instead, they have become the chief apologists for George Bush’s policy of aggressive imperialism and undeclared war. Clearly, the apostate church has slid further into the abyss than any of us were willing to admit.”

BATW member Keith Humphrey said, “When Christians cheer the mass murder of an unjust war, then the apostasy is complete."

BELIEVERS AGAINST THE WAR urges all Christians to view the occupations of Iraq and Afghanistan in light of this admonishment from Jesus: “You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your mind. This is the first and great commandment. And the second is like it: You shall love your neighbor as yourself."

We can be confident that our country's aggressive and outrageous behavior toward the people of Iraq is in direct conflict with both of those commands.
